I stole this from some other forum but here it goes.

Quote:

...and one time, I asked Jabberwocky about sticking his opinion about women and gaming for the Planethalflife mailbag. He said it would be a good idea, if it hadn't be done a million times before.

You're probably gonna get some of the following responses:
-Girls don't play video games as much as guys
-Girls DO play video games as much as guys, but they are different styles of games
-Girls like the Sims and MMORPGS better than FPS games
-The next generation of kids (Gen Z) will have a more gender-even playing field of video gamers

The problem with any statement relating to games is that the actual number of women gamers may never be known. There are those girls in multiplayer games who will put a feminine spin on their nicks (ie. LadyOfDeath, IcePrincess, etc.) but that group of females cannot be counted accurately because there are guys who do that to their names (feminize them) as well...for whatever reason - usually for a laugh.

Additionally, there are women who play multiplayer games who use may use gender-neutral or masculine names. I personally use all gender-neutral names when playing online. None of those names lead you to believe I'm a woman if you're in the server with me, and I like 'em because I think they're cool. I have found that using a feminine name in TFC, at least, can often be distracting. Being that Team Fortress Classic is a war game, nothing aggravates me more than to have some twat try to chat me up in-game, whilst I am trying to accomplish an objective.

So realize that you'll never quite be certain with how many women you'll be playing. Some will be men posing as women, and some will be women that simply don't feel like making their gender an issue during a game. And you know what? It shouldn't.

Maestro one time told me something I found very wise, "There shouldn't be 'male gamers' and 'female gamers'....just GAMERS." I think if we focus on gender differences we get caught up not realizing what it's all about - having fun.

There is a gamesnet channel in IRC called #gamergirls. It's very popular with many females, and in turn, guys as well. I stay away from it because I think they're going about things entirely the wrong way.

One time, I ventured into the gamergirl channel many months ago and came across the following topic: "You laugh at us because we're different. We laugh at you because your all the same!" (I included the grammatical error.) This kind of elitist attitude where women seek to separate themselves from men only serves to keep the genders apart. Anyone who chooses a clanmate or a user in IRC because of gender is just as bad as someone who denies entrance to those groups because of it as well.

As for the article, "Genderplay: Successes and Failures in Character Designs for Videogames", those people who try desperately to link the way Lara Croft is designed with how women will respond to her, or any character, is ridiculous. Women don't get all bent out of shape because they see some character with Barbie-like features. I personally disliked Tomb Raider because I thought the game was too damned frustrating to complete.

After studying psychology and interface design for over a decade, in my opinion, game designers still haven't gotten it yet. If it's fun and usable, everyone will play it. It doesn't matter WTF you make the main characters look like.

Back in "THA DAY", there was a skewed difference between the amount of men and women on the internet. When I first went on in 1993, there were more men than women online. I believe that has evened out for the most part now.

As for gaming, whilst growing up ALL my friends had Ataris. In fact, the only person I knew with a PC was a girl. I grew up in a small farm town, so you could hardly call us progressive. Even my old sorority house had a Nintendo the girls would take turns playing while we waited for meetings to start.

Anyway, don't take too seriously that sexrole archetype bullshit in that article. You can take a pile of manure and you can shape it into a Michaelangelo's David, but it's still a pile of crap, nonetheless.

Interesting article that I agree with to a point. When I first burst onto the Quake 3 scene as a raw newbie, I used a neutral nick - 'Slof'. A couple of weeks later I met a clan who I became good friends with (all male) - they knew I was a girl - within a week of getting to know them, I was made a member of the clan. It didn't matter to them that I was female, indeed they found it cool.

As we improved our gameplay, we began to attract the attention of other clans who challenged us to clan games, and by the middle of that year we were playing in the Barryworld international leagues. By the time I had been playing about 2 years, I was considered one of the best female Quake players in the UK - we were playing in Division 2 which was tough, but fun. I concentrated on mastering the railgun, considered by many Quake players to be the hardest weapon to master, I soon became good enough to beat most of my clan mates with it.

There has been a downside to being a female gamer too. I was pretty well known on the servers I played on, and quite often mates would come on and greet me with 'hi, Sloffy babe' - this told strangers I was a girl - I was once beating up a German guy who left in a huff saying 'I'm not staying to be beaten by a bloody girl', I've been booted off servers 'we don't want girls on here', etc.

Luckily, those incidents were few, most of the time I was made welcome by the lads, some certainly thought it was cool to be beaten by a girl!

I've never wanted to be in an all-girl clan - I prefer to play on equal terms or not at all - one of the lads and all that - I've never wanted, or asked for special treatment. I just like playing games.

i got this perfect example. sloffie. she is on here with us guys all the time. she is a girl. and she beats all of us in writing. girls are fewer on this type of thing but if they are on here then they are usually pretty damn good.
i personelly think girls on the games like AvP2 are no different then the guys. hell i kick out guys that make any sexual remarks to the girls that the girls dont like. its not the place or the time.

i agree whole heartedly with alien lord, i have been known to burst into an arguement in defense for some1, even when i was not even in the comversation... a bad habit i picked up on the net, while most of the time good here... in real life, i got yelled at for butting in... talk about irony!

these stereotypes get on my nerves... why ive arm wrestled (and sparred) with many girls, and lost horribly!!!

thats my 10 cents...

most girls are just as good as guys if not better. but the ones that arent keep up the stereotypes for the rest. ex. ditzy, annoying, superficial, and over all just bitches. but for any girl who does play games like AvP2 i commend them. for playing with the boys and dealing with our imaturity.

hmm women in gaming

as good or if not better?
I actually do not see the difference between guys and girls in the game, its not like it takes that much skill or brainpower to oporate a keyboard
but i will say that guyg do outnumber girls in games, no doubt about it
but i dont care anyway, I frag people no matter what gender they are

Anonymity is the primary allure of the internet. The people you interact with will know only as much about you as you allow them to know. I'm a guy....big deal! I'd probably still go by Techno_JF (or Techno_*F of some form, anyway) even if I was a girl. To this day, a picture of me has not slipped onto the internet with my knowledge. However, I have a lot of friends online that I can match to faces, primarily because I have seen pictures of them on their websites or in forums like these. (In all honesty, I will eventually release a picture of myself somewhere, but it will not be from four years ago, and it will not be with me having a thick, bushy beard on my face.)

So, I can ignore gender online, because a bunch of words on a screen or a character mesh in a multiplayer game certainly aren't male or female just because of who is using them.

Fucking lamer, couldn't even bother quoting your source? This is what we call plagarism, and if I knew where you lived, I'd come over and beat you to a pulp. You know EXACTLY who wrote that, and not citing them as your source is pure laziness, not to mention bad writing. If this were an english class, you would have failed. But since this isn't, just watch your back man... watch your back...

And you, whoever you are, need to learn what the word 'plagiarism' means - and indeed how to spell it. It means taking something and passing it off as your own. Correct me if I'm wrong but Helios actually said:

I don't see him trying to pass it off as his own with that statement. OK, so maybe he should have mentioned the source, but he was only trying to get a healthy debate going. Issuing silly, empty threats doesn't solve anything and just makes you look childish. You could have put forward your complaint a great deal more eloquently and looked less dumb.
